Message from Bob Mardon @ Club 85:
Club 85 is a grassroots music venue in the leafy Hertfordshire town of Hitchin.
I’ve been running the place for nearly 20 years, always aiming to create the best local venue we can, be it for major touring acts or young musicians taking their first tentative steps, they are all performers and deserve the best and most welcoming platform from which to shine.
Venues like Club 85 are the Research and Development Department of the music industry and the entry level for careers in all aspects of entertainment and events.
Many people have started their careers here, successful musicians, tour managers, agents, promoters, record company execs, sound engineers, studio engineers, riggers, security and crew for festivals and conferences, even a gaffer in film and TV, all see Club 85 as the first rung on the ladder of their now successful and rewarding careers.
Financially we run on fumes most of the time, when there’s a bit a cash we buy a new microphone or a driver for the PA, but the current Covid 19 lockdown has stopped all that, at the time of writing this we’ve been closed for 10 weeks and there is little hope in sight of us being able to reopen any time soon.
The crowdfunder we ran as part of the Save Our Venues campaign means we’ll be able to cover the bills for a few more months but the future is less than certain and finding a way to reopen safely that is viable as we look at various scenarios proposed by the government is a depressing process.
However the outpouring of love and support from so many people who have grown up on our stage and or come to our venue is hugely encouraging, empowering and humbling all at the same time.
None more so than this wonderful collection that has been pulled together of tracks offered by some of our oldest friends to help us through these strange times.
Don’t take on running a live music venue thinking it’ll make you wealthy, but if love and goodwill had monetary value then you’d be at the top of the rich list every year.
Running club 85 is a labour of love, nurturing talent, facilitating development, making memories for everyone involved is our business and the rewards are huge as you watch young talent develop and blossom in the knowledge that you are providing the platform.
